The German UNESCO Commission has honoured the excursion portal "Energieparcours-Nordwest", which was developed at the University of Oldenburg, as a project of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. Dr Verena Niesel and Prof. Dr Michael Komorek from the project "Education for Sustainable Energy Supply and Use" accepted the certificate on 26 September 2011 in Kiel as part of the annual UN Decade Day of Action. "The Energy Parcour Northwest impressively demonstrates what sustainable education can look like. The jury's vote honours the project because it conveys in an understandable way how people act sustainably," explained Prof. Gerhard de Haan, Chair of the National Committee and the jury of the UN Decade in Germany. The UNESCO award recognises initiatives that implement the aims of the United Nations' global education campaign in an exemplary manner by teaching children and adults how to think and act sustainably. The Northwest Energy Trail offers schoolchildren didactically designed excursions to biogas or wind power plants, energy research laboratories and other energy sites in the northwest region. It is an initiative of the university's interdisciplinary project "Education for Sustainable Energy Supply and Utilisation", which developed the course in close co-operation with the regional education network "Climate & Energy" of the city of Oldenburg. The aim of the trail is to provide pupils with an insight into the energy sector, to teach them the theoretical basics in a clear and authentic way and to inform them about job profiles and career opportunities in the field of renewable energies. Teachers can use the "Energieparcours-Nordwest.de" web portal to book excursions on topics such as "Water, heat and energy in a leisure pool", "How does a passive house work?" or "Future careers on the rise - a tour of a wind turbine".
