Energy meteorology

The influence of the weather on the future energy supply

Second symposium for energy meteorology

Research questions on the influence of the weather on the future energy supply from biomass, wind farms and solar plants are the focus of the second symposium on energy meteorology. It will take place from 6 to 8 April 2011 in Bremerhaven (Comfort Hotel, Am Schaufenster 7) and is being organised by the Energy Meteorology working group at the University of Oldenburg in co-operation with the German Aerospace Centre (DLR).

Weather and climate influences have a direct impact on the power generated by wind and solar power plants. The conference, which was attended by over 85 participants, focussed on ways of describing and predicting these influences as precisely as possible. This will make it possible to find optimal locations for the power plants and better integrate the fluctuating output into the power grid. In addition, new generations of plants can be developed that are better adapted to the respective weather conditions. These findings will help to increase the proportion of renewable energies in the energy supply.
