Oldenburg physicist explains energy problems
Pupils and teachers at the Max-Eyth-Schule in Schiffdorf have hired a physicist. Physicist Prof. Dr Joachim Peinke left Oldenburg University on 17 February to give an insight into energy generation using wind power and solar cells and to inspire around 100 pupils to study physics.
Peinke, who is also Vice President of the
European Academy for Wind Energy, used vivid examples from everyday life to illustrate how high our personal energy consumption is and how urgently we need to become less dependent on oil as a source of energy. He explained the physical principles of wind power and photovoltaics in an understandable way, addressed the technical problems that still need to be solved and reported on current research projects in these fields at the University of Oldenburg. As future technologies are an important focus of teaching at the Max-Eyth-Schule, there were numerous questions for the physics professor and an interesting discussion. The professor was invited by Jutta Stark, an electrical engineering teacher at the school. The "Rent a Prof" initiative makes science hands-on. The free offer for schools comes from the Institute of Physics at the University of Oldenburg. Physicists from the Institute give schools an insight into various topics. The aim is to familiarise pupils with the study of physics.
