Oldenburg. Study and career opportunities for physicists and mathematicians are the focus of the "Day of Physics" and the "Day of Mathematics", both of which will take place on Wednesday, 6 November, from 9.15 a.m., on the Wechloy campus of the University of Oldenburg. The events are aimed at pupils, teachers, first-year students and interested members of the public.

The "Day of Physics" begins at 9.15 a.m. with guided tours of the research laboratories. Physics didactics expert Prof. Dr Michael Komorek will award the "Facharbeiten-Preis" to outstanding student research papers. Afterwards, the Oldenburg physicist Prof. Dr Niklas Nilius will give an insight into experimental physics in his lecture "Von Nanoblumen und Nanoketten". Prof Dr Ulrike Feudel will introduce the research field of theoretical physics. The topic of her lecture: "Life in the ocean - the bridge between physics and biology". After the presentation of the degree programmes, graduates answer questions about starting a career in the section "Degree ... and then?". questions about starting a career. In addition, the physics working groups and young scientists will provide information about their research projects on the ring level of the Wechloy campus.

At the "Day of Mathematics", Prof. Dr Bernd Kawohl, mathematician at the University of Cologne, will give the keynote lecture "Of buttons and balls that can't roll away" at 12.00 noon. There will be numerous lectures and information events in the run-up to the event: Dr Peter Krug will address "The Simpson Paradox" and Prof. Dr Hannes Uecker will talk about "Mathematical Analysis of Pattern Formation on Animal Fur and in Related Systems". From 1 p.m., the "Maths Mile" will be offered in the entrance area with exhibits to participate in and think along with. It will be supervised by students from the first three semesters. Pupils will also receive first-hand information about studying at the University of Oldenburg from students at the Info Café.
