Lecture "Modern radiooncology - of photons, protons and illusions"
Oldenburg. On Thursday, 12.09.2013, physicist Prof. Dr Björn Poppe and Dr Kay C. Willborn, Director of the Clinical Centre for Radiotherapy, Haematology and Oncology at Pius Hospital, will give a joint lecture on the topic of "Modern radiooncology - of photons, protons and illusions" at 7.30 pm in the Schlaues Haus. The speakers will talk about current developments, applications and potentials, but also about treatment.
Alongside surgery and chemotherapy, radiotherapy is one of the three pillars of cancer treatment. Its effect is based on the targeted absorption of ionising radiation in the tumour tissue while at the same time minimising the exposure of healthy cells.
Whereas 10 to 15 years ago, patients were mainly irradiated with radiation fields of homogeneous intensity distribution, today it is possible to choose from a range of treatment techniques and types of radiation and to modulate the intensity distribution of the radiation almost at will.
Admission to the lecture is free.
