Support for you

You’re never on your own here

SUPPORT FOR YOU

From your first day in Oldenburg right through to your final exam, genuine support is built into the university – not just for physics, but to help you settle into life here. Below you’ll find details of who does what, and how to get in touch with them.

International Office

ADMIN & ARRIVAL

What it is

The university’s dedicated International Student Office for everything to do with being an international student here.

How it supports you

Before you arrive, they guide you through visa requirements and the necessary paperwork. Once you’re in Oldenburg, they help with enrolment, residence permits and registering for health insurance, and organise a structured Welcome Week so you don’t have to spend your first few days figuring it all out on your own.

AStA – Student Union

STUDENT VOICE

What it is

The independent, student-run union that represents every student at the university.

How it supports you

The AStA advice team helps with social and financial issues such as BAföG, accommodation or money worries, and refers you to legal aid if you find yourself in a dispute. They organise much of the social programme on the campus and speak directly to the university management on students’ behalf – think of them as your advocate, not an administrative office.

Student Buddy

FIRST WEEKS

What it is

A peer-matching programme that pairs you with a current student before you even arrive.

How it supports you

Your buddy answers those everyday questions that are hard to find on Google – where to get a bike repaired, how to register your address, which canteen queue moves fastest. Just as importantly, they’re a friendly face during your first few weeks, whilst you’re still finding your feet.

Subject-specific academic advising for Physics

ACADEMIC

What it is

Subject-specific academic advising provided by the Physics Department itself.

How it supports you

Not generic university advising – these are lecturers who know the degree programme inside out. They help you plan your course load each semester, choose optional modules, organise a semester abroad, and later select a Master’s specialisation that truly matches your interests.
