Mathematics Symposium – Core Competences in Mathematics Teaching in Years 1–6

Basic mathematical skills in arithmetic form the foundation for successful learning in mathematics lessons. Essentially, this involves developing a sound understanding of numbers and operations, the foundations of which are laid in primary school and are to be further developed in secondary school. This understanding determines whether children learn to use and build upon arithmetic relationships, or whether gaps in their understanding become entrenched, thereby preventing them from gaining deeper mathematical insights.

This symposium focuses on these basic skills, bringing together the perspectives of primary and secondary education. The centre of attention is not only theoretical frameworks but also practical approaches to assessment and support that can be applied to teachers’ own lessons.

Programme:

08:30 – Registration

09:00 – Presentation: “Promoting basic arithmetic skills in primary school in a language-conscious and comprehension-oriented way” – Prof. Dr Daniela Götze, TU Dortmund

09:45 – Presentation: “Ensuring the quality of (inclusive) maths teaching in Years 5/6: The importance of assessing and supporting basic mathematical skills” – Prof. Dr Birte Friedrich, University of Potsdam

10:30 – Coffee break

10.45 – Workshop Phase I:

  • WS 1: Explanatory videos in maths lessons – promoting language, strengthening basic skills, working digitally; Years 2–6 (Dr Simeon Schwob)
  • WS 2: Diagnosing and developing basic skills: identifying misconceptions and gently correcting them; Years 3–6 (Markus Ledebur)
  • WS 3: Moving away from counting-based calculation; Years 1–2 (Heike Buddenberg)
  • Workshop 4: Identifying, diagnosing and developing an understanding of place value as a basic arithmetic skill; Years 5–6 (Birte Friedrich)

12.15 – Lunch break

13:30 – Workshop Phase II

15:00 – Closing
