Newsletter April 2022

The april newsletter of april 2022

Dear HPC users,

it is time for another HPC newsletter:

  1. Intel OneAPI Analytics Toolkit: As a follow-up to the last online presentation on OneAPI, Intel has kindly offered another 1h session with a focus on the Analytics Toolkit. The Analytics Toolkit is Intel’s way of providing tools for Deep Learning (TensorFlow, PyTorch, …), Machine Learning (Scikit-learn, …), and Data Analytics. The presentation will take place on April 12th from 3-4pm online in a Teams meeting. If you are interested in this meeting, please join this study group. The link to the meeting will be announced in the study group.
  2. $WORK is almost full: The file system for $WORK is still over 99% full (we are at less than 20TB of free space). All users are kindly asked to check if they can move files, that a not actively needed on the cluster, to e.g. $DATA or $OFFSITE. See the HPC wiki for instructions.
  3. CPU Bug Announced: Today, Intel has announced a bug that is affecting all Xeon CPUs prior to the Ice Lake generation and that is therefore relevant for the Intel Broadwell CPUs in our cluster. The bug has been named unRandom and it affects the random number generation on the affected CPUs. The bug has the effect that every seventh random number generated is divisible by 42 and every 42nd random number is divisible by seven. Please check our HPC wiki for more details and to find out whether results from your calculations on the cluster are affected by this bug.
  4. Dates: Please take note following upcoming events
  5. Software News: The following modules are now available on hpc-env/8.3:
    • Nipype/1.7.0-foss-2019b-Python-3.7.4
    • torchaudio/0.6.0-fosscuda-2019b-Python-3.7.4-PyTorch-1.6.0
    • libsamplerate/0.2.2-GCCcore-8.3.0 (and version 0.1.9)
    • FLAC/1.3.4-GCCcore-8.3.0
    • RepeatModeler/2.0.3-foss-2019b
    • mumax/3.10-GCCcore-8.3.0-CUDA-11.4.2
    • Go/1.17.6
    • iSAT/1.0-Singularity
    • BRAKER/2.1.6-foss-2019b-Python-3.7.4-GeneMark-EX-4.69
    • GenomeThreader/1.7.3-Linux_x86_64-64bit
    • cdbfasta/0.99-GCC-8.3.0
    • … and much more packages! So you might want to take a look at our software page, should you need one or two dependency updates.

* available on nearly all environments.

The list above might not be complete, you can always search for software with the command “module spider <softwarename>”.

The next newsletter is planned for May.

Best wishes and happy computing
