Main areas of work and research | Cooperation partners

Sachunterricht is a subject with natural science and social science content. It is taught exclusively in primary school and supports a general understanding of science at primary school age.

Main areas of work:

  • Historical learning in primary school
  • Learning with immersive reality (AR/VR)
  • Sources and extracurricular places of learning in primary school
  • Digitalisation in subject teaching/media education
  • Lesson planning by (prospective) teachers
  • Teacher professionalism

Research projects:

Co-operation partner:

The Prize Papers Project is researching and digitising the captured property of around 30,000 ship conquests from the early modern era. The material from the National Archives in London includes ship's papers, lists of goods, private letters, diaries, medical treatises, sheet music and much more. The voices of men, women and children from a wide range of social and geographical contexts, which went unheard for 250 years, provide insights into the networks and everyday routines of a global, early modern world.

Workshop for primary school children: The National Archives (London)

The National Archives (London) - Time Travel Club: Privateers and their treasure (15th November 2025)

Arrrr' you ready to set sail and explore the Prize Papers? Captured by British ships in the 17th and 18th centuries, these documents share fascinating histories of treasures across the world.

Explore the Prize Papers, a huge collection of letters, papers and objects captured by British ships in wars in the 17th and 18th centuries. Where did they come from - and what treasures came with them?

This event is run in partnership with Dr Silke Bakenhus, who leads the the QuaSU project and works at Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg in the Department of Primary Education and Social Studies.

As part of the Prize Papers Project collaborative network, QuaSU explores how historical sources - such as letters and logbooks - can be used in primary education, developing age-appropriate learning tasks and teaching materials to introduce children to historical topics.

The event is supported by Dr Lucas Haasis (German Maritime Museum/Prize Papers Project).
