Information for Oldenburg students

From Oldenburg abroad

A stay abroad is a tremendous personal enrichment and enormously important for your language and country skills. Please contact us early on to plan your stay abroad. We will be happy to advise you on when it makes the most sense for you to study abroad and which of our partner institutes best suits your interests.

You can complete your stay abroad at one of our partner institutes as part of the Erasmus+ programme. You also have the opportunity to study abroad at our partner institutes outside of the Erasmus+ programme. However, in response to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, co-operation in research and teaching with the Russian Federation and Belarus has been suspended. This is a decision that the Institute of Slavic Studies expressly supports. Accordingly, stays abroad in the Russian Federation and Belarus are not possible. In the case of a compulsory study-related stay abroad in your degree programme (Master of Education Russian for Secondary Schools), please note the regulation on compensation.

Due to the security situation, stays at our partner institutes in Ukraine are also currently not possible. However, co-operation with universities in Ukraine is of course possible in other formats (participation in any online events, etc.).

Recognition

Erasmus+ students agree on a clearly defined study programme in a Learning Agreement before the start of their study abroad. This agreement is signed by both the host and home universities and the student and ensures easier academic recognition.

After the study abroad programme, students must then submit a proposal for recognition of credits from abroad. Further information can be found here.

Study abroad outside the Erasmus+ programme

University partnerships

Many of the university's partner universities also offer the opportunity to study abroad outside of the Erasmus+ programme. You can find an overview of the university partnerships here. However, as a reaction to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, co-operation in research and teaching with the Russian Federation and Belarus has been suspended. This is a decision that the Institute of Slavic Studies expressly supports. Stays abroad in the Russian Federation and Belarus are therefore not possible. Due to the security situation, stays at our partner institutes in Ukraine are also currently not possible. However, co-operation with universities in Ukraine in other formats (participation in any online events etc.) is of course possible.

Application

An application for a semester abroad at one of our partner universities outside of Erasmus+ is made via the International Office. Applications are submitted in May/June of each year for the following (calendar) year. The International Office publishes the current call for applications on its website and via its "Studyabroad" newsletter.

Recognition

It is possible for credits earned abroad in Slavic Studies to be recognised. However, specialised and practical language courses abroad can only be recognised if

  • prior to the start of the semester abroad, it is agreed with the Slavic Studies Student Advisory Service a) which courses will be taken abroad and b) to what extent the courses can be recognised;
  • the courses taken abroad will be graded (the examination performance must be verifiable by the marking);
  • the scope of the courses taken abroad is not less than that of the Oldenburg modules.

For language modules, a maximum of 1 level per semester is generally recognised.

Courses attended abroad that are not recognised as part of the core curriculum may be recognised in the area of specialisation (e.g. module PB 179); this possibility should also be discussed in advance with those responsible for Slavic Studies.

Recognition of credits earned abroad

In principle, it is possible for credits earned abroad to be recognised in Slavic Studies. However, specialised and practical language courses abroad can only be recognised if

  • before the start of the semester abroad, it is agreed with those responsible for Slavic Studies (module coordinator or head of department) a) which courses will be taken abroad and b) to what extent the courses can be recognised;
  • the courses taken abroad are graded (the examination results must be verifiable by the marking);
  • the scope of the courses taken abroad is not less than that of the Oldenburg modules.

In any case, please consult the relevant lecturers before your stay abroad, or the state ministry for teaching degree programmes.

Scholarships and funding opportunities

The financing of stays abroad is quite simple for students of Slavic Studies: The co-operations with the host institutions provide scholarships that cover at least part of the cost of living abroad.

However, there are many other ways to obtain support with the financing of a study abroad programme.

For stays in other European countries (e.g. also for Poland), for example, the Erasmus programme programme can be used. Stays of up to 6 months (study, internship, language course) can also be funded via the PROMOSscholarship, study visits to non-European partner universities, for example via the Wanderlust Grant can be funded. The DAAD programme specifically dedicated to the East Go East programme dedicated to the East. Further information can be found here.

Slavic studies graduates may also be interested in the Robert Bosch Foundation which organises annual lecturer programmes for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. In any case, it is worth visiting the website of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) DAADeven if you have already completed your studies and are perhaps aiming for a doctorate or want to work abroad as a language assistant.

If you already have a doctorate and are working in academia, you may be eligible for a scholarship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation may be an option for you.

The teachers of Slavic Studies and the International Office will be happy to help you organise your stay abroad.

! In any case: Please inform and apply in time !
