AVENIR

As the main cause of death from infectious diseases, sepsis is associated with around 20% of all deaths worldwide. As sepsis can occur with any underlying disease and often presents with unspecific initial symptoms, its emergency treatment is an interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral challenge. Any delay in hospitalisation, adequate diagnosis and guideline-compliant acute treatment is associated with an increase in hospital mortality, which in Germany is higher than in other industrialised countries. One in three sepsis survivors suffers from new cognitive, psychological or physical sequelae, for which specific treatment and aftercare concepts are still lacking.

The aim of the AVENIR project is to improve sepsis care through an improved understanding of patient pathways and subjective care experiences and needs along the entire care pathway during and after sepsis. Based on this, concrete recommendations for the organisation of care are to be drawn up and patient information materials developed with close patient involvement.
