Simulation centre
As part of a co-operation project between the Department of Big Data in Medicine (University of Oldenburg) and the University Clinic for Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Pain Therapy (Klinikum Oldenburg), a simulation centre is being set up that will be available for further clinical education and university teaching as well as for research purposes. The simulation centre is located on the premises of Oldenburg Hospital and is equipped with the iStan simulation phantom from the Big Data in Medicine department. With the resources of the hospital, the available equipment will be expanded with devices and materials so that the equipment of the simulation centre corresponds to an operating theatre (ventilator, defibrillator, anaesthesia machine, medication, etc.). The patient data management system (PDMS) of the hospital will be introduced as a central element in the simulation centre and will have the same interfaces and features of the system that is also used in everyday clinical practice on the hospital's wards.
The simulation centre will be used for the further education of doctors at the hospital and for university teaching. The focus is on simulations of airway management, treatment of patients who are not fasting, anaphylaxis, pulmonary embolism and the procedure in the event of a device defect. Technically, however, it should be possible to simulate all emergency situations. The (routine) data generated during the simulation scenarios is transferred from the devices used, the PDMS and other conceivable sources to the Big Data in Medicine department and stored in a structured manner in a simulation database. Based on this data, a digital twin of the simulation centre is created in the laboratory of the Big Data in Medicine department, which enables a retrospective evaluation of the simulated scenarios and potentially provides new insights into the clinical processes of the simulation scenarios and possible sources of error. Another area of application of the simulation environment is the initial testing and standardised evaluation of new Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) in a realistic clinical environment.
