Studying with a child

Studying with a child

Head: Prof Dr Karin Flaake, Prof Dr Heike Fleßner

Student assistants: Juliane Pegel, Petra Schmalz

The situation of a special group of students was the centre of a study on young women and men with children at the University of Oldenburg. On the basis of quantitative and qualitative surveys, central problems of the life and study situation of student parents, the productive aspects of studying with a child, the clearly differentiated gender-specific coping strategies for this situation as well as university-related wishes for an improvement in the possibilities of being able to successfully complete the degree programme were worked out. The study was conducted in the context of implementing the goals of the "Family-Friendly University" audit, which was awarded to the University of Oldenburg in 2004. The results, which were presented at the nationwide conference "Studying with Children" in the 2006 winter semester, were combined with concrete recommendations for action for the University of Oldenburg.
