The drama of the penalty shoot-out against fearful opponents Italy was unrivalled: "I just hoped that it would somehow go in. I didn't actually expect to be the scorer. But then you have to take your heart in your hand, put it in and wipe your mouth." (Quote from Jonas Hector in an interview with the Kölner Express. With this goal, the game was decided - and the long series of defeats against Italy was successfully ended.
Jonas Hector is not only active on the pitch, however. He is successfully studying Business Administration for Competitive Athletes at the University of Oldenburg. This further education degree programme is offered at the Centre for Lifelong Learning (C3L) as "blended learning", so flexible that a successful career as an athlete remains possible.
