The university library reading room was packed to capacity for the opening event of the 2026 summer semester. Among the approximately 140 knowledge-seekers present were not only familiar faces but also many new ones – a sign that the programme is booming.

Following a welcome address by Prof. Dr Andrea Strübind, the university’s Vice-President for Studies and Teaching, there was a fascinating lecture by Dr Philipp Köker, a private lecturer at the Institute of Social Sciences, entitled ‘Is populism a threat to democracy?’ In his talk, the political scientist placed the rise of populist parties and figures in a broader context and explained why, particularly at this moment in time, many people are drawn to populist promises. He highlighted how populist forces can undermine democracy – even if they do not come to power – and what citizens, as well as politicians, can do to counter these threats.
