The university library hall was packed at the opening event for the 2026 summer semester. Among the 140 or so thirsty for knowledge, there were familiar faces as well as many new ones - because the programme is booming.
A welcoming address by Prof Dr Andrea Strübind, Vice President of the University for Studies and Teaching, was followed by an exciting lecture entitled "Is populism a threat to democracy?"by Privatdozent Dr Philipp Köker from the Institute of Social Sciences. In it, the political scientist placed the rise of populist parties and actors in a wider context and explained why many people feel attracted to populist promises right now. He showed how populist forces can undermine democracy - even if they do not come to power - and what citizens and politicians can do to counter these dangers.
A new record of 800 students enrolled on the guest lecture programme was set last winter semester. If you still want to take part, you can register for the 2026 summer semester until 30 April at https://uol.de/gasthoerstudium
