On 19 June, 46 Year 10 pupils from the Oldenburg area were awarded the Angelus Sala Prize at the Institute of Chemistry at the University of Oldenburg in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the subject of chemistry. Most of the pupils were given time off school for this special occasion so that they could receive the award in person at the university’s Wechloy campus. As this year’s award ceremony took place as part of the university’s Open Day, the pupils also had the opportunity to find out about the range of degree programmes on offer at the university and to get a taste of university life.
For the Institute of Chemistry, the visit by around 40 young people was a success and an important sign of support for the next generation of scientists.“We were delighted by the visit and the great interest shown by the teachers and pupils, and we offer our warmest congratulations to the prize winners!” says Jarl Ivar van der Vlugt, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry and Programme Director of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Chemistry, who presented the Angelus Sala Prizes together with the Head of the Department, Prof. Thomas Müller. Prof. van der Vlugt emphasises: “In this context, special thanks go to the schools and the dedicated teachers. Without their ongoing support, the time off granted for the event and their daily efforts to motivate pupils in the classroom, such promotion of talent would not be possible.”
The Institute also links the award to a hope for the future:“We would be delighted if these young people were to continue their journey in the natural sciences and remain committed to the subject of chemistry in the future – perhaps as part of a later degree programme at our university.”
