Christian Wetz studied Protestant theology, biology and philosophy at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen. From 2002 to 2004, he was a doctoral scholarship holder of the Hessian Luther Foundation of the Protestant Church in Hesse and Nassau (EKHN). From 2004 to 2009, he worked as a research assistant at the Chair of Biblical Theology at the University of Bayreuth, then as a lecturer in Ancient History and History of Religion at the University of Bayreuth. From 2010 to 2012, Wetz was a vicar in the EKHN and in 2012/13 a special vicar at the profile centre for ecumenism in the Grünberg/Hungen/Kirchberg deanery network. Since April 2013, he has been a research assistant in the subject of New Testament at the Institute for Protestant Theology and Religious Education at the University of Oldenburg. In 2008, Wetz completed his doctorate at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel with a thesis on "Joseph and Aseneth". He received the Faculty Prize of the Year 2009 from Kiel University for his work. In 2013, he was awarded the Bronze Dove of the German Ecumenical Preaching Prize for a narrative sermon on the story of Luke's birth. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oldenburg ordained Wetz as an honorary pastor in 2023.
