Research on the didactics of subject teaching

Before moving to the University of Oldenburg, I held a professorship for didactics of subject teaching at the University of Bielefeld for several years. My research focussed on the following areas:

 

  1. Historical learning in subject teaching - here I am also continuing research in Oldenburg (see Ongoing research: Early historical learning).
  2. New conceptualisation of social science perspectives for non-fiction teaching with a focus on historical learning, political learning, consumer education and mobility education
  3. Methodological orientation in non-fiction teaching

  5. I have also founded and published a series of books with the main aim of preparing the most important findings of the related disciplines of non-fiction teaching in such a way that students, trainee teachers and teachers in service receive assistance in familiarising themselves quickly and competently with key subject areas. This is particularly necessary in subject teaching because, in view of its diversity, only an in-depth insight into a few specialised aspects is possible when studying subject teaching. On the other hand, knowledge of essential questions, content, methods and results of the numerous other related sciences (specialised sciences and subject didactics) is necessary for the implementation of responsible science-oriented subject teaching, if everyday knowledge and everyday theories are not to be declared sufficient prerequisites for lesson preparation and implementation. The book series entitled "Dimensionen des Sachunterrichts" was published by Schneider Verlag Hohengehren. I wrote and edited the first three volumes on political learning, historical learning and methods in subject teaching myself. I have since handed over the series to my colleague Markus Peschel, as I have not been working full-time in subject teaching for some time now; it is now published under the slightly different title: "Kinder. Things. Worlds. Dimensions of non-fiction teaching". In 2017, however, I updated two of my own three books and rewrote or edited them.
