Columbia, Medellín: Universidad EAFIT

Application

The academic year at EAFIT is divided into two terms. Term 1 (January to May) and Term 2 (July to November). Master's students in economics and advanced Bachelor's students (at least 5th semester) can apply for one semester.

Applications for the exchange programme are accepted in May and June for the following (calendar) year.

You must submit a Spanish language certificate (at least B1 level) and an English language certificate (at least B2 level) with your application.

Study

EAFIT consists of five departments: Management, Business and Finance, Engineering, Humanities and Law. Within these areas, a wide variety of academic programmes are offered.

Extensive co-operation facilitates the participation of international students in academic, cultural and research-related activities. In addition, EAFIT has a buddy programme that enables international students to make contact with EAFIT students before they arrive at the university. The university's academic programme consists mainly of courses taught in Spanish. Some undergraduate programmes, summer courses and graduate programmes are offered in English.

Everyday life

Medellín is the second largest city in Colombia and is regarded as a centre of commercial, industrial and technological development. Medellín is well known in the fields of finance, art, culture, communication, fashion and entertainment, which is why the city offers students many opportunities.

Geographically, the city is located in a valley surrounded by green mountains, which has earned it the nickname "City of Eternal Spring". Incidentally, the average temperature is around 23°C (73°F).

Medellín is the first Colombian city to have an extensive public transport system. This includes buses, the metro and, for example, cable cars. Thanks to this network, all areas of the city are easily accessible. The university is located right next to the Aguacatala station on Metro Line A.

The cost of living depends heavily on the amount of rent and where you live, but is generally cheaper than in Germany. In the capital Bogotá, for example, you need to budget around 500 euros per month for food, accommodation, study materials and leisure time. In other cities, you should be able to manage with around 100 euros less.

Formalities & interesting facts

You are strongly advised to take out additional international or travel health insurance. You should also check any other insurance policies you may have (accident and liability insurance).

Students from the Schengen area who stay in Colombia for between 90 and 180 days do not require a visa. When entering Colombia, they show the so-called "PID-letter" (= entry permit letter) and the "acceptance letter" (acceptance letter for studies). You will receive both documents in advance from the EAFIT International Office.

Important: When you enter Germany, you will receive a stamp that is valid for 90 days. Please make sure that you do not receive the tourist stamp, but the stamp on which "PID" is ticked. You must show the stamp to the EAFIT International Office during the orientation week. The EAFIT International Office will send the information to the Colombian migration authorities. One week before the expiry date of the stamp, the entry stamp must be renewed. This can be done online on the following website. You must select the option "Permiso temporal de permanencia para prorrogar permanencia".
