A new course in the subject area of "Medical Computing Science" for the summer semester 2023!

The new Big Data in Medicine department offers new courses for Computing Science students (Bachelor's and Master's) in the field of "Medical Informatics".

The new Big Data in Medicine department is offering new modules (at Bachelor’s and Master’s level) in the field of ‘Medical Computing Science’ to computer science students.

The following modules will be offered in the coming summer semester of 2023:

- Medical Computing Science II: A practice-oriented simulation in interoperability and communication standards (Bachelor’s, module inf521)
Why are data exchange and data-driven communication in healthcare so difficult? What does ‘interoperability’ mean, why is it so important for successful ‘digitalisation in medicine’, and how can we, as Computing Science professionals, implement this? As part of this course, you will gain a deeper understanding of this aspect of medical Computing Science, learn how to apply the relevant standards and technologies, and simulate the flow of medical data and messages in data-driven medical communication.

- Clinical Decision Support Systems (Master’s, module inf523)
Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) are “(...) any computer programme designed to help healthcare professionals make clinical decisions” [Shortliffe et al. 2011] - It sounds so simple, but it is difficult to implement. In this course, you will learn about the types and application classes of CDSS, analyse requirements and technical implementation concepts, and discuss success factors, opportunities and limitations – in relation to existing CDSS or those you will develop yourself.

- Introduction to Medicine for Computing Science (Master’s)
Medical informatics is characterised by close collaboration with medical domain experts and interdisciplinary work on medical use cases. In this module, Dr Andreas Klausen (Senior Registrar at the Emergency Centre, Oldenburg University Hospital) therefore covers interesting fundamental topics from the field of medicine.

- Discussion of current topics in Medical Computing Science (Bachelor’s and Master’s)
In this seminar, we discuss current topics relating to Medical Computing Science – drawing on new technologies, publications, research findings or projects.

- Research Seminar: Big Data in Medicine (Bachelor’s)
You will learn to apply scientific methods to an exciting research topic in the field of medical Computing Science. For example, you will search for and familiarise yourself with the relevant literature, understand and evaluate the approaches, and discuss them according to scientific standards. It is possible to take the research seminar as a supplement to your final dissertation.

- Theses (including advanced seminars, Bachelor’s and Master’s)

- ‘Medical Computing Science’ specialisation in the Master’s programme:

The Master’s modules on offer count towards the ‘Medical Informatics’ specialisation.

We look forward to your participation!
