Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

Save the Date! Day of Teaching and Learning on 12 November 2026

How can empathy enrich teaching at universities? What role do understanding and emotional connection play in the teacher–student relationships? How can empathy be put into practice in academic settings? These and other questions are at the heart of this year’s Day of Teaching and Learning (Tag des Lehrens und Lernens, TdLL) which will focus on changing perspectives, empathy, and the relationship-based teaching design.

TaskCards – A new tool for your teaching

Virtual (bulletin) boards are a versatile pedagogical tool for supporting teaching and learning processes independent of time or location. Since March 2026, TaskCards has been available at the University of Oldenburg as a data protection-compliant alternative to Padlet. On Wednesday, 16 September 2026, there will be an introduction to TaskCards as part of the Mittagstreffen series (12:30–13:30, online, in German).

Dialog im Fokus – a qualitative method with many uses

How have first-year students experienced the transition into their degree programme? How has the newly established degree programme been received? How can qualitative feedback on study and working conditions be obtained from students and staff?

Questions such as these can be addressed through the moderated group discussion Dialog im Fokus (DiFo). Pre-determined guiding questions are used to identify a group’s views and suggestions for improvement on a specific topic.

The results for the 2025/26 winter semester are now available

Accreditation and Quality Management

The kick-off meeting on 26 February 2026 for the re-accreditation of the Oldenburg Teacher Training Model marked the official launch of the upcoming process. The event was hosted by the Vice-President for Studying and Teaching, Prof. Dr Andrea Strübind, who thereby set the framework for a joint and formal start.

The discussion focused on key organisational and content-related issues: the selection of advisors, the structure and coordination of reporting, and the consultation on specific timetables for the on-site visit in autumn 2027. The structured preparatory work carried out by the Model Working Group provided a clear working basis on which all participants could engage in focused discussions and prepare decisions.

The meeting was characterised by a lively, analytical exchange and a shared understanding of the next steps. This has laid a solid foundation for the further development of the re-accreditation process.

Panel of experts discusses artificial intelligence in teaching, study programmes and examinations

Under the motto ‘Shaping the future of teaching together’, a panel of experts from the University of Oldenburg met for the first time on 4 March 2026 to discuss issues related to digital transformation in teaching, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence. In addition to the Vice-President for Studies and Teaching, Prof. Dr Andrea Strübind, the panel comprised a total of ten professors from all six schools. Two students representatives, and administrative staff from the Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and the University Computing Centre also took part in the first meeting.

The inaugural meeting centred on the development of tutor bots for teaching and the results of a state-wide survey of teaching staff at universities in Lower Saxony.

The panel is organised by the joint project Digital Teaching Hub Lower Saxony (DLHN), whose sub-projects at the UOL are overseen by University Strategy Unit. PD Dr Wolfgang Müskens is chairing the expert panel, which meets every six months.

HRK’s call for experts to help shape AI examination guidelines

The German Rectors’ Conference (Hochschulrektorenkonferenz, HRK) invited experts to join a working group Artificial Intelligence and Examinations at German Universities. The aim is to develop a guide that will support universities in strategically addressing challenges posed by AI in examinations. Over the course of a year, the working group will address issues such as AI-generated examination results, new examination formats, and proof of competence. Susanne Schorer and Janine Horn from the University Strategy Unit’s, Teaching Division, will contribute their expertise in the working group.
