Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology on the future of digital media

"From MP3 to Holodeck: Thoughts on the future of digital media" - this is the title of the lecture to be given by Prof. Dr Karlheinz Brandenburg, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology (IDMT) in Illmenau on Thursday, 3 February at 4.00 pm in the Chamber Music Hall (Haarentor campus, Building A 11) at the University of Oldenburg. The public lecture marks the start of the Integrated Media degree programme's guest lecture series and is organised by the Institute of Music.

Brandenburg played a fundamental role in the development of the MP3 music format, a technology that has shaped our listening habits more than almost any other in the recent past. The techniques described in his dissertation form the basis for the development of the MPEG Layer (MP3), MPEG-2 Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) and many other modern methods of autocoding. He studied electrical engineering and mathematics at the University of Erlagen, where he also obtained his doctorate in 1989. He has been Director of the Institute for Media Technology at the Technical University of Illmenau since 2000. In the same year, he was appointed head of the Fraunhofer Working Group for Electronic Media Technology (AEMT) in Illmenau, which he transferred to the independent Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology (IDMT) in 2004. The university lecturer in media technology was honoured with the German Future Prize in 2000.
