For anyone planning a career in the spotlight alongside their studies, or who simply wants to give free rein to their creativity, the university offers plenty of opportunities: whether it’s theatre, music or dance – everything is available right here on the campus. Here are a few examples.
The first port of call for theatre and cabaret is the Studentenwerk with its ‘Unikum’ stage, right next to the canteen building on the Haarentor campus. Big names from the German cabaret and variety scene, as well as singer-songwriters, often perform there. But the programme also features speed dating, poetry slams and improv theatre. Furthermore, the ‘Unikum’ is the home stage of the ‘Oldenburg University Theatre’ (out).
‘out’ supports independent theatre groups at the university where needed and, through its own stage productions, offers all students the chance to take their first steps into the world of theatre. Whether on stage or behind the scenes. The ‘Theatre Workshop’, which ‘out’ runs every winter semester, is the ideal introduction to the world of acting and teaches students the basics of acting and directing.
Anyone wishing to develop their artistic talents has the opportunity to do so at the Institute of Music. Each winter semester, the University Choir is reconstituted under the direction of Manfred Klinkebiel and begins rehearsals for a double programme, which is performed in two to three concerts between February and July.
The University Orchestra comprises around 50 students, lecturers and staff members from the university. Under the baton of Rida Murtada, the orchestra rehearses works ranging from Bach to contemporary music, which are performed at the end of the semester in a grand final concert. The pop and jazz choir, the early music ensemble, the Uni-Soul Band and the Uni-Big Band, as well as the percussion group ‘Schlagwerk Ossietzky’ and the world music ensemble, round off the programme.
