How can electricity be generated with colourful films? How do our senses of taste and smell work? Which materials can be used to utilise sunlight to generate energy? These and other questions will be answered at the "Experience Chemistry" open day on Saturday, 20 September, on the Wechloy campus.
Chemists at the university will provide an insight into their research between 10.00 and 14.00 in laboratory tours, lectures, hands-on stations and presentations. The event in Building W3 is part of the nationwide Open Day organised by the German Chemical Industry Association (VCI) and admission is free.
Chemistry influences our daily lives - often unnoticed: Modern chemical materials are used in clothing, consumer electronics and cars, for example. Scientists from the Institute of Chemistry at the University of Oldenburg, the affiliated institute EWE-Forschungszentrum NEXT ENERGY and the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials (IFAM) will be providing information on how chemistry is present in almost all areas of our everyday lives and giving insights into their fields of research at the open day.
In easy-to-understand presentations, they will explain why new energy storage materials are necessary or how tea gets its flavour. In guided tours and hands-on stations, visitors learn how "tasting and smelling - our chemical senses" work or how chemical research contributes to our future energy supply.
