"Mathematical Problem Solving and Proving - A Journey of Discovery into Mathematics" is the title of the new book by Prof. Dr Daniel Grieser, university lecturer in mathematics with a focus on analysis. On Tuesday, 7 May at 6.15 pm, he will be presenting the book to interested laypeople on the university's Lifelong Learning Campus (Ammerländer Heerstraße 136, Room V03 0-E003).
In his book, Grieser emphasises that mathematics is a creative process. According to the Oldenburg mathematician, knowledge of intermediate level maths is often sufficient to experience this fascination. In the book, Grieser encourages his readers to solve mathematical problems and provide proofs on their own. In this way, they learn how maths works and develop their mathematical creativity.
"You will get to know maths from a completely new perspective: not as a collection of calculation techniques and formulae, but as a world that you can explore for yourself, in which you can develop your own ideas and unearth wonderful treasures," writes Grieser in his book. In his lecture, he presents "new paths" into mathematics and introduces participants to his fascination for the "queen of sciences", as the mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855) called the discipline.
