Discover, try out, join in, marvel and play - that is the motto of the KinderCampus. To mark its 50th anniversary, the university is inviting children and their families to an adventure day on the Haarentor campus on Saturday, 20 April, from 10.00 am to 4.30 pm. The event is free of charge. Some of the activities require prior registration at uol.de/50jahre/kindercampus, while many can be attended spontaneously.
The programme with numerous offers from the most diverse areas of the university shows: There is an infinite amount to explore in the world. For example, young visitors to the KinderCampus can look forward to three exciting short lectures in the university's largest lecture theatre, the Audimax. They are aimed at schoolchildren aged between eight and twelve, who must register online in advance if they want to attend. From 11.30 a.m., biologist Prof Dr Heiko Schmaljohann will address the topic "From us to Africa and back again! How do migratory birds actually do it?". From 1.30 pm, linguist Prof. Dr Esther Ruigendijk will explain "How does language get into your head?" and from 3.00 pm, physicist Prof. Dr Andreas Engel will answer the question "Who wants to fly to the moon?". During the short lectures, the lecture theatre belongs solely to the children, adults are not allowed in. They can follow the lectures (without registration) live on a screen in the library hall.
However, the lectures are by no means the only item on the programme that will provide insights into the world of science on this special day. Children and their families can try out lots of interesting things at various locations on the Haarentor campus. They can be part of an improvisation theatre, go on a rally through the large university library or have a medical check-up to find out what is wrong with the cuddly toy they have brought with them. There are also various workshops on the topics of music, ethics and ecology. At a hands-on station, children compete against their parents in small tasks, digital tools can be tried out in the Learning Lab and telescopes can be marvelled at in the Tiny Observatory, an observatory on wheels. Readings, various activities organised by university sports, the Spielefant play mobile and the Oldenburg Teaching-Learning Labs (OLELA) as well as an exhibition on children's rights round off the discovery tour. There will also be plenty of music from the popular Oldenburg band "Die Blindfische".
