Culture on campus

For many people, a successful degree programme is not just about attending seminars, lectures and tutorials, but also about student cultural life. The university offers a wide range of opportunities for this.

For many people, a successful degree programme is not just about attending seminars, lectures and tutorials, but also about student cultural life. The university offers a wide range of opportunities for this.

Whether theatre, music and cinema or your own radio production - everything is possible directly on campus. The first port of call for theatre and cabaret is the student union with its "Unikum" stage, right next to the canteen on the Haarentor campus. Various bands and individual artists perform there alongside big names from the German cabaret scene. Poetry slams and improvisation theatre are also on the programme. The "Unikum" is also the home stage of the "Oldenburg University Theatre" (OUT). OUT supports the independent theatre groups at the university and offers all students the opportunity to venture into the world of theatre with their own stage productions. The university cinema "Gegenlicht" is also run by students. A different film is shown here every Wednesday evening during the lecture period - from romantic dramas, comedies and action films to sophisticated trash. Popcorn and cold drinks are also available at affordable prices.

Those who want to develop their musical talents have various opportunities on campus, for example in the University Choir or in the University Orchestra, which consists of around 50 students and university staff. Under the direction of Rida Murtada, they rehearse orchestral works ranging from Bach to contemporary music and perform them in a big final concert at the end of the semester. The "World Music Ensemble" under the direction of Nangialai Nashir is also open to all people from the university and the city of Oldenburg - especially those with migration experience. Anyone interested in taking part in these or any of the other ensembles should contact the director in advance and state which instrument or voice range they have "on offer".

What's new on campus and in the city? This is the question that campus radio is investigating. In collaboration with the local radio station Oldenburg Eins, it broadcasts a colourful mix of topics every first Thursday of the month from 6.00 pm. The students produce the contributions themselves and determine the topics of the programme. Anyone who would like to actively participate: The team meets once a week on the Haarentor campus for an editorial meeting - the date can be found online in the Stud.IP event "Praxisveranstaltung: Campusradio". Radio beginners are also very welcome!

German and international students are equally welcome at the Intercultural Meeting in the Student Service Centre (SSC). Events such as the International Dinner, the International Coffee Hour, the Language Café or games and country evenings offer a varied programme for getting to know people, having fun and gaining new experiences. In addition to the regular events, there are also lectures on current topics, information events on studying abroad and various craft workshops.

There are also many forms of student involvement on campus. In the "NachDenkstatt", students work interdisciplinarily and with people from different areas of society on ideas for sustainable forms of business. In the Astro-AG, astronomy enthusiasts look at the stars. And in the campus garden, students with green fingers can garden to their heart's content. Details on these and many other programmes, initiatives and groups can be found under the links provided.
