A place to bring science and research closer to the people of the region: The Smart House Oldenburg has established itself as Oldenburg's location for science communication over the past ten years. The mission: to bring science to life for people of all ages.
At one or two events a week - more than a hundred a year - researchers engage in dialogue with interested citizens, from schoolchildren to pensioners. Current successful formats include the "University Medicine Oldenburg Office Hours" lecture series, guided tours of the starry sky and the "Hirn vom Hahn" series, in which researchers talk about their disciplines, scientific questions and findings in pubs in University Medicine Oldenburg.
In the new event format "science.shorts", the public can ask short questions to scientists. At the next event on 18 February, neuroscientists Prof. Dr Andrea Hildebrandt and Prof. Dr Christiane Köppl and other researchers from the university will provide information about their specialist areas - the deadline for submitting questions is 7 February.
The idea for a science centre was born as part of Oldenburg's successful bid to become Germany's "City of Science 2009". The foundation stone was laid in December 2010, and after almost two years of construction, The Smart House Oldenburg was opened on Schloßplatz right in the centre of Oldenburg. The partners are the University and Jade University of Applied Sciences.
The listed building combines elements of new and old architecture. A town house built in 1562 was extended by a new building with a glass front and equipped with energy-efficient building technology and photovoltaics. Modern conference rooms and media technology are available for scientific conferences on around 670 square metres of floor space. Two exhibition areas offer space for hands-on science.
