Students and pupils celebrate ancient Olympic Games

Bringing history to life: students from the university's Department of Ancient History have researched the historical background of the Olympic Games. Together with pupils from the region, they recently recreated the games of the year 67.

The pupils from the sixth to twelfth grades from the region first marched through Oldenburg's city centre to the municipal sports grounds on Alexanderstraße in historical dress. There they competed against each other in the Olympic disciplines of the time, for example in the standing long jump with swing weights.

Following the ancient model, there were also musical competitions and ritual acts in honour of Olympian Zeus. Of course, the classic chariot race was also a must. Emperor Nero, portrayed by history student Marco Mertens, was victorious.

The organisers of "EVENTVS" want to highlight the importance of the culture and intellectual world of antiquity with their events. The Graf-Anton-Günther-Schule, the Alte Gymnasium and the Gymnasium Eversten, the Gymnasium Westerstede and the Alte Gymnasium from Bremen took part in the "Olympic Games" in Oldenburg.
