The structural work on the Student Service Centre (SSC) is complete. Spanning four floors, the SSC brings together all the student advisory services – which were previously scattered across the campus.
Guests at the topping-out ceremony on 18 December included Lower Saxony’s Minister for Finance, Peter-Jürgen Schneider, City Planning Councillor Gabriele Nießen and the Head of the Ems-Weser State Building Management Authority, Klaus Wieting.
“Just in time for the University of Oldenburg’s 40th anniversary, the future Service Centre is taking shape. I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this construction project with such great dedication. Provided everything goes smoothly, the new building will be ready for use by the 2014/2015 winter semester,” said Finance Minister Peter-Jürgen Schneider.
“Excellent advice under one roof on all matters relating to your studies: this is what the Student Service Centre will offer in future. I am delighted that the study conditions at the University of Oldenburg are now set to become even more attractive thanks to the short distances between students and advisers,” explains University President Prof. Dr Babette Simon.
Spanning around 1,300 square metres, the SSC houses all student advisory services: the Examinations Office, the Career Service, the International Student Office, the Admissions office and the Central Student Advisory Service. The social, disability, housing and financial advisory services run by the Oldenburg Studentenwerk are also moving into the building – as is the Psychosocial Counselling Centre, a joint initiative between the university and the Studentenwerk. An ‘intercultural meeting place’ and a ‘quiet room’ round off the facilities on offer.
The majority of the costs, amounting to around 4.3 million euros, are being covered by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture (MWK). The university is contributing 200,000 euros towards the project. The client is the State of Lower Saxony, represented by the Ems-Weser State Building Management Agency.
