University celebrates family festival

The University of Oldenburg has been a family-friendly university for ten years - and is celebrating this with a family festival on the Haarentor campus on Friday, 11 July. On the Mensa forecourt (in the neighbouring open-air sports hall in case of bad weather), children and adults are invited to enjoy a varied programme.

The programme includes Friedrich the Magician, the "Spielefant" play mobile and the Oldenburg band "Die Blindfische" with live music. Biologists and chemists from the university's Green School, Sensory School and the "CHEMOL" project will be offering hands-on experiments such as smelling colours or making sherbet rockets. The celebrations run from 2 to 6 p.m., with catering provided by the adult education centre's youth workshop.

In 2004, the University of Oldenburg was the first university in Lower Saxony and one of the first ten universities in Germany to be awarded the Family-Friendly University Audit certificate. The seal of quality, which is awarded for three years by the non-profit Hertie Foundation, was recently awarded for the fourth time in a row for its family-friendly study and working conditions. The family festival on 11 July is part of the "40 Years of Oldenburg University" programme.
