Welcome to the university

Starting a new chapter in life is always something special. The 2,100 or so first-year students celebrated the start of their studies with a colourful mix of theatre, music and good wishes.

"Starting your studies, organising yourselves independently, discovering the university world - this is certainly a special step for all of you. I am delighted that you have chosen the University of Oldenburg for this new stage in your lives. You are very welcome." With these words, University President Prof. Dr Dr Michael Piper welcomed the first semester students in the Audimax of the lecture hall centre.

The Vice President for Studies, Teaching and Gender Equality, Prof Dr Sabine Kyora, welcomed the new students, as did Head of Department Nadine Carina Waitz. Meanwhile, representatives of the AStA called on the first-semester students to get involved in university politics during their time at university. Bayan Anouz, a pedagogy student from Syria, gave an insight into her studies in Oldenburg - and reported on what a colourful, international university means to her.

Astronauts and pub evenings on the programme

Culture and entertainment were not neglected during the one-hour event either: equipped with a space suit, Agnes Kammerer from the Oldenburg State Theatre presented an excerpt from the play "Mission Mars". There was also much applause for the student band "Soulicious". Jens-Steffen Scherer, doctoral candidate at the Department for Neuroscience and winner of the Oldenburg Science Slam 2018, hosted the programme. In the foyer of the lecture hall centre, the new students received information and tips about studying and about culture and sport on campus.

The orientation week now begins with the official welcome of the first semester students. Until 11 October, the "newcomers" will get to know the city and the university better. A varied programme is planned to help them find their way around campus and get to know their fellow students better: from drawing up a timetable to pub evenings, everything is included.

We wish all first-year students a good start at university!
