Central, spacious, affordable - everyone dreams of a flat like this. But how do you find it? A little guide to your own four walls. Finding an affordable flat is one of the first challenges of student life. The good news is that the situation in Oldenburg is nowhere near as tight as in other university cities. Rents are also lower than in southern Germany or in major cities such as Hamburg. Nevertheless, it can be difficult to find a place to live at the start of the winter semester. Anyone moving to Oldenburg should therefore start looking for a place to live as early as possible. The first port of call for this is the Student Union. With a total of ten halls of residence and almost 1500 rooms, it offers the largest and most varied range of accommodation for students in the city. Brand new: from 4 October, students can move into three houses in the Alte Färberei residential complex in the immediate vicinity of the university. They offer space for 138 students and applications are now open. The rents for a room at the student union start at a comparatively low 160 euros warm rent and range up to 456 euros for the single flats of up to 46 square metres in the Ecology Centre directly on Uhlhornsweg. Depending on size and location, you should budget between 250 and 350 euros for a room in a shared flat. There are many ways to find your first flat: shared flats are posted on various notice boards on campus looking for flatmates, and you can find them online in the university forum, on Stud.IP and on the wg-gesucht portal. The Oldenburg housing association GSG offers special flats with moderate rents. The Oscar-Romero-Haus run by the Catholic University Community offers accommodation for ten students not far from the university, and the university-affiliated Hermann-Ehlers-Haus - a private hall of residence - also offers single rooms with a shared kitchen and one-bedroom flats. Accommodation can also be found via other internet portals, local estate agents and classified adverts in the print media. The Nordwest-Zeitung, the Hunte-Report, the Oldenburger Sonntagszeitung, the weekly newspaper DIABOLO and the event journal Mox have classified ad sections with private flat adverts. If you are on site, you should also take a look at the AStA's housing notice board on the Haarentor campus. It is located in the central area near the canteen in room M1-153. The Studentenwerk has compiled further tips on its homepage in the "Guide for first-semester students". If all else fails, the Studentenwerk even offers emergency beds for the winter semester. In the Johann-Justus-Weg hall of residence, a few beds can be set up in the common room at short notice. Fortunately, most first-semester students find accommodation in good time - in recent years the demand for an emergency solution has usually been very low.
