Contemporary history inspires art students

The terrorist attacks of 11 September, the NSA wiretapping affair and other events in contemporary history have inspired twelve Oldenburg students to create a wide range of artistic works. The results are currently on display in lecture theatre centre A14.

The terrorist attacks of 11 September, the NSA surveillance scandal, the unexplained death of Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko and other events in recent history have inspired twelve students at the University of Oldenburg to create a diverse range of artistic works. The results are currently on display in Lecture Theatre Centre A14.

The works were created during the last winter semester under the guidance of lecturer Natascha Kaßner from the Institute of Art and Visual Culture. To begin with, the students created a series of photo collages based on a historical event, in which their own bodies were to play a role alongside accessories and backdrops they had developed themselves. These collages served as the basis for the diverse works now on display in the exhibition.

For example, Sina Cobi combined the 1972 press photograph showing a girl in Vietnam fleeing a napalm attack with the psychedelic art of the 1970s. Friederike Kirschner uses drawings in the style of Marc Lombardi to draw a connection between the unexplained death of Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko and the KGB, whilst Lisa Gaidamowitsch and Sabrina Murr have recreated the World Trade Centre in miniature to commemorate the terrorist attacks of 11 September. Thao Bin Trach’s video explores the political decision by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to set the clock back by half an hour. Sarah Rosenbohm, on the other hand, uses her installation to tell the story of her acquaintance Dada, who fought as a child soldier in Africa.

The exhibition “From Revolt to Space Flight” is on display until 17 November at the Lecture Theatre Centre (Haarentor Campus, Building A14, Uhlhornsweg 86). The building is open on weekdays from 6.00 am to 8.00 pm.
