Contemporary history inspires art students

The terrorist attacks of 11 September, the NSA wiretapping affair, the unexplained death of Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko and other events in contemporary history have inspired twelve students at the University of Oldenburg to create a wide range of artistic works. The results are currently on display in lecture theatre centre A14.

The works were created last winter semester under the direction of lecturer Natascha Kaßner from the Institute of Art and Visual Culture. Initially, the students created a series of photo collages on a historical event, in which their own bodies were to play a role alongside accessories and backgrounds they had developed themselves. These collages served as the basis for the multifaceted works that can now be seen in the exhibition.

For example, Sina Cobi combined the 1972 press photo of a girl fleeing a napalm attack in Vietnam with the psychedelic painting of the 1970s. Friederike Kirschner uses drawings in the spirit of Marc Lombardi to establish a connection between the unsolved death of Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko and the KGB, while Lisa Gaidamowitsch and Sabrina Murr have recreated the World Trade Centre in miniature format to commemorate the terrorist attacks of 11 September. Thao Bin Trach's video thematises the political decision by North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un to set the clock half an hour off. Sarah Rosenbohm's installation, on the other hand, tells the story of her friend Dada, who fought as a child soldier in Africa.

The exhibition "From Revolt to Space Flight" can be seen until 17 November in the Hörsaalzentrum (Haarentor campus, building A14, Uhlhornsweg 86). The building is open on weekdays from 6.00 am to 8.00 pm.
