Didactics of philosophy

Research focus on the didactics of the subjects of philosophy and values and norms

The Department of Didactics of Philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy is committed to a broad concept of the didactics of philosophy as a subject. Philosophy didactics as a sub-discipline of philosophy aims to critically analyse philosophical concepts of reasoning, methods and media, theories of education and implicit basic assumptions of relevant concepts. Equally fundamental is the instruction and reflection of the practice of teaching and learning. Based on this broad understanding, this area of work focusses on various areas.

Philosophical subject didactics draws on and is orientated towards practice itself. For this reason, there is close cooperation with various institutions such as schools, study seminars, professional associations and the NLQ. The close co-operation with schools makes it possible to carry out seminars and projects in the mode of research-based learning with pupils of different ages and learning requirements. In order to meet the requirements of joint philosophising with pupils and students, the department has its own room designed to combine theory and practice - the ethics workshop.

Extracurricular places of learning such as the Universum Bremen or the State Museum of Nature and Man are also investigated as part of subject didactic research. Philosophising with children also plays a central role in the didactics of philosophy in Oldenburg.

The Department of Didactics of Philosophy works critically with studies, results and experiences from practice and uses these to investigate and expand various methods and approaches to teaching or to explore completely new approaches. Different learning prerequisites, resources and inequalities, among other things, play a role in the research.

The department's research is complemented by critical work with various traditions, positions, schools of thought and schools of philosophy. This serves both as a touchstone for research and as a foundation for the transformation of original approaches.
