Literature
Relevant literature for the courses of the WG Biodiversity and Evolution of Plants is listed below. The books will be presented in more detail at the beginning of the course and can be consulted at any time with the respective lecturer.
1. bio210 General Biology - Basic Curriculum (WS/SS)
The basis of the lectures "Evolution of land plants" and "Evolution of flowering plants" in the winter semester are chapters 29 and 30 respectively, the basis of the lecture "Reproduction systems of plants" in the summer semester is chapter 39 of Purves, Spektrum Verlag, latest edition. Other textbooks such as the Strasburger Lehrbuch der Botanik (Bresinsky et al., ed.), Spektrum Verlag or cheaper versions are also suitable.
2. bio240/245 Diversity of forms: Flora - consecutive curriculum (SS)
In the identification exercises we use the Rothmaler Exkursionsflora von Deutschland, Band 2, Gefäßpflanzen: Grundband, Spektrum Verlag, latest edition. A handout on the more recent systematics is also provided.
Volume 3: Atlas volume (with drawings of the plants) is recommended as additional literature. For students interested beyond the course, it is recommended that they purchase Volume 4, Vascular Plants: Critical Volume.
Tod Stuessy - Plant Taxonomy, Columbia University Press and M.G. Simpson - Plant Systematics, Elsevier are recommended as further reading for the lecture.
3. bio320 Pollination and dispersal biology - accentuation (SS)
The course is not based on a specific textbook. For the interested student, we recommend Dieter Heß - Die Blüte, Eugen Ulmer Verlag and Leins & Erbar -Blüte und Frucht, Schweizerbart'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung.
4. bio370 Specialisation module Flora - Accentuation (SS)
The course is based on the Rothmaler Exkursionsflora von Deutschland, Band 2, Gefäßpflanzen: Grundband, Spektrum Verlag, latest edition. Group-specific specialised literature is also presented.
5. bio300 Evolutionary Biology - Accentuation (WS)
The best textbook for this course is Douglas Futuyma - Evolution Das Original mit Übersetzungshilfen, Spektrum Akademischer Verlag. Useful further reading is Coyne & Orr - Speciation, Sinauer Associates.
6. PB157 Guided tours in the Botanical Garden and outdoor areas - area of specialisation Bio120 Teaching and learning in the green school - advanced module (SS)
There is no special textbook for this course. Some of the content can be found in Düll & Kutzelnigg - Taschenlexikon der Pflanzen Deutschlands. A botanical-ecological excursion guide, Quelle und Meyer Verlag.
7. bio700 Biodiversity and Ecology of Plants - Master Basic Module(WS)
The lecture is not based on a specific textbook. However, the theory of essential parts can be found in Kevin Gaston & John Spicer - Biodiversity - An Introduction, Blackwell Publ. and Jürgen Schultz - Die Ökozonen der Welt - UTB-Verlag and Wolfgang Nentwig et al. - Ökologie kompakt, Spektrum Akademischer Verlag.
8. bio730 Evolutionary Biology I - Master's basic module (WS)
The basics for the biodiversity and evolution of plants part of this course can best be studied in Trevor Beebee and Graham Rowe - An introduction to molecular Ecology, Oxford University Press and Coyne & Orr - Speciation, Sinauer Associates.
