FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about the application:

Can I apply directly to the University of Oldenburg to study medicine?

No, applications for medicine must be submitted exclusively via the Foundation for University Admissions: www.hochschulstart.de. An exception is made for foreign nationals with a higher education entrance qualification obtained at a foreign school, as well as for Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.

Are international applicants also admitted to the medical degree programme in Oldenburg?

There are two groups of international applicants. One group has equal opportunities and must apply via the Foundation for University Admissions (www.hochschulstart.de). The other group must apply to the University of Oldenburg via uni-assist. Further information can be found on the website of the International Student Office at the University of Oldenburg. Please note: Documents should be submitted via Uni-Assist in good time to ensure that your verified application documents reach us by 15 July (deadline).

When and how does the university’s own application procedure take place?

At present, the School is not conducting any local selection procedure.

Do I also need to apply to the University of Groningen?

No, an application via the Foundation for University Admissions (www.hochschulstart.de) for the Oldenburg campus is sufficient.

Where and when can I take the TMS?

Once a year, you can take the TMS at 50 different locations across Germany. For the latest information, please visit: www.tms-info.org

How can I use my TMS or TMSnat results when applying for jobs in the future?

A transition period is planned to coincide with the launch of the upgraded TMSnat and the phasing out of the TMS, during which the University of Oldenburg is expected to continue accepting both test results (with equal weighting) until the winter semester 2027/28.

The following quota structure is currently being planned:

  • Top A-level results quota: selection here will continue to be based solely on the HZB (ranking on the national list)
  • AdH 1 (50%): HZB (university entrance qualification): 50%
    TMS or TMSnat*): 20%
    Vocational training: 30%
  •  AdH2 (50%): HZB (university entrance qualification): 50%
    TMS or TMSnat*): 47%
    Military service: 3%
  • ZEQ : TMS or TMSnat*): 30%
    Vocational training: 45%
    Services: 25%

*)If both TMS and TMSnat results are available, the higher score will be used.

It is still possible to apply without a test result or with only one. In particular, students taking their A-levels in 2027 should take into account the final administration of the TMS in November 2026, including the registration period in July 2026 (www.tms-info.org), in their application strategy.

From the admissions process for the winter semester 28/29 onwards, only the enhanced test will be taken into account in the selection process. You can find all information on the current TMS and the enhanced test at www.tms-info.org. Please direct any specific questions regarding the testing procedures to the relevant department.

Please also note that this relates exclusively to the specific structure of the allocation procedure for the University of Oldenburg; the respective structure of the allocation procedures is determined by the universities themselves and may differ at other universities.

Is it possible to enrol for the summer term?

No, in Oldenburg you can only enrol for the winter semester. The academic year always begins on 1 October.

Are waiting semesters taken into account in the selection procedure?

Waiting periods will no longer be taken into account from the 2022/23 winter semester onwards.

Entry into higher semesters:

I am in my first semester of medical school at another university and would like to transfer. Can I apply for a place at Oldenburg for the first semester?

To do so, you will need to reapply to the Foundation for University Admissions at www.hochschulstart.de.

I am already studying medicine. Is it possible to join the course at a higher semester?

If there is space available, it is possible to join the programme at a higher semester. Please note, however, that the programme in Oldenburg differs significantly from a standard degree programme in terms of content and the sequence of modules. Further information is available here

Can I transfer into the medical degree programme having completed a bachelor’s degree?

No, the pilot programme in Medicine at the University of Oldenburg follows the guidelines set out in the Medical Licensing Regulations and does not offer the opportunity to obtain a bachelor’s or master’s degree, nor does it allow students to join the programme with such a qualification.

Is it possible to transfer to another German university at a later stage of the degree programme?

Yes, although it is recommended that you switch only after the 6th semester. Switching at any other point may result in your degree programme being extended.
The model degree programme in Medicine in Oldenburg is structured in accordance with the Medical Licensing Regulations; however, the sequence of teaching does not correspond to that of standard degree programmes. Certificates of equivalence are issued for the knowledge acquired after the 6th semester; these allow you to enrol in the 5th semester (= 1st clinical semester) at another university, subject to availability.

General questions about studying:

I have specific questions about studying in Oldenburg and about the course itself, and I’d like some advice. Who should I contact?

Please contact the Central Student and Career Counselling Service at the University of Oldenburg.

How long does an academic year or a semester last?

In the first three years of the degree programme, each academic year consists of four modules. Each module lasts ten weeks, meaning there are 40 weeks of study per year. In the later semesters (years 4–5), the structure is different, but here too, an academic year lasts 40 weeks. The semester breaks are therefore considerably shorter than in other degree programmes.

Are bachelor’s and master’s degrees in medicine also offered in Oldenburg?

No, you can only obtain a Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree at our partner university, the University of Groningen. The programme in Oldenburg concludes with the State Examination.

Questions about studying abroad in Groningen:

Is knowledge of Dutch required before starting your studies?

Do I have to study in Groningen for a specific period of time?

No, but you can plan to spend time studying in Groningen at various stages of your degree without extending the duration of your studies. The credits and exam results from Groningen will be recognised in Oldenburg.

Do students in Groningen have to pay additional tuition fees for the compulsory year?

No, no additional tuition fees are required for the period spent abroad as part of the Oldenburg medical degree programme.

In which language are the courses taught in Groningen?
