Diagnostics and anticipation training for handball goalkeepers
The timely and correct anticipation of an opponent's action based on (movement) information available before the ball flies is a central component of goalkeeper tactics and an essential prerequisite for outstanding defensive performances by handball goalkeepers. The anticipatory requirements found at the national and international top level of the adult game pose a major challenge, especially for junior goalkeepers in the transition to the adult game.
The aim of this project (running from April 2021 to March 2023), which is funded by the Federal Institute of Sports Science, is to diagnose the defensive tactical behaviour of handball goalkeepers - and in particular their anticipation performance - and to improve it through supplementary training measures in order to reduce the gap between the perceptual-cognitive requirements of junior and adult players. The project is being carried out in co-operation with the German Handball Federation.

Evaluation of the German Handball Federation's talent scouting and promotion system
As part of a co-operation between Prof. Büsch and the German Handball Federation (Deutscher Handballbund e. V.), which began in 2008, and with the support of the handball section of the Institute for Applied Training Science, the talent assessment and development system in handball was developed and has been evaluated and systematically developed further every year since then. The formative and summative evaluation of this research project combines sports science and practical sports expertise and is regularly presented, discussed, documented and further developed in national and international short reports, lectures, scientific articles and in national and international coach education and further education.

How fit are our sports students?
During their studies, sports students have to perform not only cognitive but also sports motor skills, for which certain physical requirements are necessary not only for their own realisation, but also for the prevention of sports injuries. The extent to which these prerequisites are available to prevent injuries that may prolong the duration of studies or can be supported by additional exercise and training programmes is being examined in this project. In the long term, the aim is to contribute to the continuous improvement of study quality in sports studies.
One part of the project is preventive diagnostics for sports students during the orientation week. Sports students are given the opportunity to have their potential risk of injury assessed as part of a preventive screening programme right at the start of their studies. Possible risk factors for knee, ankle, shoulder or back injuries are examined in various tests and the students' potential risk of injury is categorised.

Diagnostics of referee decisions in handball under stress (in co-operation with the "Sport and Exercise" department)
Handball referees are an essential part of the game. They are responsible for ensuring that a game is played in accordance with the rules and in a way that supports the game. To ensure that the game is consistently officiated in accordance with the rules, it is necessary for referees to make correct decisions despite the high or increasing physical and mental stress during a game (e.g. running distance, spectators).
In this project (running from January 2019 to December 2020), which is funded by the Federal Institute of Sports Science, several sub-studies will systematically examine whether top handball referees are able to make correct decisions consistently and at a high level despite increasing physical and mental stress. The project is being carried out in co-operation with the German Handball Federation whose squads, i.e. from the international referees to the perspective squads, are available as a study group.

Prevention of sports injuries in university sports
In co-operation with the Lower Saxony State Accident Insurance Fund, the Prevention of Sports Injuries in University Sports project (duration January 2020 - December 2020) compares various training and prevention programmes and evaluates their effectiveness based on the available results of preventive diagnostics for sports students. The aim of the project is to be able to offer sports students one or more effective programmes to reduce the risk factors that occur in the long term. The aim is to reduce the injury rate and improve the quality of studies.
