Further information on an external semester in Potsdam

The Jewish Studies programme in Potsdam offers an interdisciplinary education with a strong focus on cultural studies. The close cooperation with neighbouring subjects such as History, Slavic Studies, German Studies, Romance Studies and English Studies enables a versatile academic perspective and a wide range of courses.

What characterises Jewish Studies in Potsdam?

Interdisciplinary teaching and research

The programme covers both Ashkenazi culture and the various traditions of Sephardic, Arab and Mizrahi Jews - a thematic focus that is rarely represented in Germany.

Co-operation & Networking

As part of the Selma Stern Centre for Jewish Studies Berlin-Brandenburg, the programme offers close cooperation with other renowned institutions. The joint course catalogue provides access to courses at Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the Centre for Research on Anti-Semitism (ZfA) and the European University Viadrina, which significantly expands the disciplinary spectrum.

Practical experience & additional qualifications

Through a co-operation with the Jewish Museum Berlin, a joint seminar on museum education topics is offered annually. Bachelor's students have the opportunity to acquire an additional qualification in the field of "Education and Mediation in Jewish Museums". In addition, exclusive internships at the Jewish Museum Berlin are available for Master's students at the University of Potsdam.

Linguistic diversity

The degree programme includes in-depth language training in Biblical Hebrew, Ivrit and Yiddish, which provides an essential foundation for academic work in Jewish Studies.

Personal exchange & close supervision

The degree programme is characterised by a personal atmosphere and close supervision. Students benefit from an open and supportive learning environment with numerous contact persons and a wide range of opportunities to help shape the programme.

Further information can also be found here in the flyer.
