Preview of hidden pages/elements
If you are logged into TYPO3, you can also preview websites that have not yet been activated. This allows you to visually check the respective page before the actual publication.
Basic function
To preview a page or content element that is currently being edited, click on the document and eye icon. This opens an additional browser tab in which the page can be viewed as it will appear publicly (after activation).
Alternatively, there is the Web→Display view in the function column on the left. This displays a preview within the TYPO3 window, which also enables the simulation of different window sizes - e.g. for smartphones and tablets.
Preview of hidden elements in already public web pages
Non-public web pages can be displayed using the normal preview function. By default, however, only the activated content elementswithin the page are displayed.
However, there may also be a reverse requirement: In an already published web page, new content elements that have not yet been activated should be displayed in the preview so that they can be checked before activation.
- To do this, call up the relevant page in the preview. (Strictly speaking, it is not a preview, as the page has already been published).
- In the bottom right-hand corner of the browser window there is a small panel with the TYPO3 logo and a red button. By clicking on the button, the panel is switched on and expands. The button turns green and the word "Settings" appears together with a cogwheel symbol.
- Clicking on "Settings" opens the panel and the "Show hidden data records" tick can now be activated at the top left under the Preview title.
- Finally, if you click on the "Update settings" button at the bottom, the website reloads and now also displays unpublished content elements.
- If you want to deactivate this preview, simply close the panel at the bottom right by clicking on the green button. The page will then be reloaded, the button will turn red again and the panel will be minimised.
"Secret" preview of as yet unpublished pages for non-TYPO3 users?
Unfortunately, there is no official preview option for unpublished pages for non-TYPO3 users. But there is something of a workaround, namely a quasi-secret publication:
It is possible to first convert the pages in question to intranet pages in the page properties
- to intranet pages,
- hide them in the menu,
- deactivate the index search (in the Behaviour tab) and
- publish/activate the pages.
These pages can then be called up in the university network, as long as their address is known (= communicated by you). However, they cannot be found via any menus, the university search or even Google.
If the pages are then to become official, the above-mentioned protection steps must be cancelled accordingly.
Video of the training course on using the admin panel in the frontend
In an online training course on the admin panel, the possibilities that are hidden behind the small red button in the footer of the public page view when you are logged into TYPO3 were shown:
- Preview hidden content (1'58")
- Show hidden pages (2'51")
- Show hidden data records (4'56")
- Simulate time (6'18")
- Simulate user group (with password protection installed) (9'58")
- Empty the cache of the current page (11'33")
- Call up the current page in the backend (14'40")
- Open content elements of the page directly for editing (16'58")
Note: The video is only accessible to members of the university.
