Properties of the websites

  • Navigation: The (green) navigation column (left) shows - if available - the subpages of the currently active page. The superordinate structure, on the other hand, can be accessed via the navigation bar ("breadcrumb line") above the page content.
  • Content structure: Central content, contact information and additional information have a fixed place (content areas "Main content", "Contact (top left)" and "Bottom left").
In addition, the contact details (in the "Contact (top left)" area) are automatically inherited to subordinate pages, unless more specific contact details are specified there.
  • Column structure: By default, there is a (left-hand) side column next to the main column. Within the main column, column constructs ("grid elements") can be used for further subdivision if required.
  • Mobile view (usability on output devices of different sizes): on small screens, the contents no longer appear next to each other, but one below the other, and in this order:
    1. "Contact (top left)" area (contact details - these are automatically displayed as a drop-down element on small screens)
    2. Main content" area
    3. Area "bottom left" (further secondary content in the sense of "see also")
  • The page title, which is also entered as the name of the page in the TYPO3 page tree, appears as the legible heading of the page. If you want to change this title, you can do so by renaming the page name in the page tree.
Subheadings can be assigned to content sections if required.
Note: If the page title is similar to the heading of a content element, the latter is automatically hidden to avoid duplication.
(see also the section"Page titles and subheadings" below).
  • Content is based on design templates that are intended to make clearer standards recognisable overall so that website visitors can find their way around more easily. In practical terms, this means that similar content is presented in the same way. Certain types of content such as news items, calendar events, forms and highlights have a refreshed, striking appearance. Even text-rich websites without their own images can be visually enlivened by displaying hyperlinks as buttons or colour-tinted tiles.

Page titles vs. entries in navigation menus

  1. The page title as the actual, complete title of the page is automatically displayed above the page content in the largest heading variant, which is only used in this one place. It is not necessary to work with abbreviated formulations here. Nevertheless, it is always advisable to formulate the page title so compactly that it is still reasonably easy to read. For more extensive names of research projects or similar, it may be more appropriate to use only an abbreviated form of the project name and place the full name as a subheading at the beginning of the actual text content of the page.
  2. However, the page also appears as an entry in the navigation menus. It is essential to use a compact formulation here. It is not about completeness, but about quick recognisability. The so-called navigation title can therefore differ from the page title. You can enter it in the page properties so that it is used instead of the page title in navigation menus.
  3. Finally, there is a third title, the subtitle, for the newly added navigation line ("breadcrumb line") in the header area. A further abbreviated description of the page can be used here, e.g. the abbreviation of the organisation's name. Even if this abbreviation may not be known to outsiders, it may still be used in the context of the web pages displayed.

Example:

  • Page title: Library and information system
  • Navigation title: Library
  • Subtitle: BIS

Automatic use of the three title variants:

  • If the navigation title is not set, the page title is used in normal navigation menus (including the drop-down menu of the navigation bar).
  • If the subtitle is not set, the navigation title is used as the subtitle if it is set, otherwise the page title is used.
