Setting up Thunderbird

The following example explains how to set up Mozilla Thunderbird to receive and send e-mails. You can get Thunderbird from the Mozillamessaging.com site.

Step 1 - Set up account

After starting Mozilla Thunderbird for the first time, the dialogue for setting up a new e-mail account appears immediately. This dialogue can also be called up manually: Menu -> New -> Existing e-mail account...
In the opened 'Set up existing e-mail address' window, enter your name (first name last name) in the name field. In the 'E-mail address' field, enter your e-mail address in the form 'Vorname.Nachname@uni-oldenburg.de'. Enter your password in the 'Password' field and tick the checkbox 'Save password'. Finally, click on the button 'Set up manually'.
In the window that opens, enter 'imap.uni-oldenburg.de' as the host name for the incoming mail server. Note that port 993 is used. Enter your user name in the form 'abcd1234' in the User name field. For the outgoing mail server, enter 'smtp.uni-oldenburg.de' as the host name. Note that port 587 is used. Enter your user name in the form 'abcd1234' in the field User name. Click on 'Done' to create the mail account and Thunderbird will connect to the server.

Step 2 - Configure Exchange access

With a mouse click on "Retrieve" (top left), your e-mails are retrieved from the server.
Right-click with the mouse to create the subfolder called "Deleted Items" under the Trash folder and the subfolder "Sent Items" under the Inbox folder.
Call up the "Account settings" with a mouse click.
In the server settings, edit the option "When deleting a message:" Select the entry "Deleted items" instead of the selection "Recycle bin".
Click on "Advanced..." to open the advanced settings.
The setting "Show only subscribed folders" should be deactivated, i.e. unchecked.
In the drop-down list on the left, select "Copies & Folders" and in the form under "Save a copy as:" change from "Folder 'sent' to:" to "Other folder:".
If a desktop PC is configured instead of a notebook, optional settings can be made on the "Synchronisation & Storage" tab in the list on the left.
Select here whether you want to save all messages on the PC, limit the time period if necessary - or specify a size limit for messages to be downloaded.
