Äsop op Platt - a sounding language atlas for Lower Saxony (2019-2024)

Project description

The Ostfriesische Landschaft and the University of Oldenburg have invited all speakers of Low German from Lower Saxony/Bremen and speakers of Sater Frisian to take part in the study "Äsop op Platt un Seeltersk". Äsop op Platt un Seeltersk is part of an international project to document European dialects. The aim of the project is to expand the sounding atlas of minority languages in Europe initiated by Dr Philippe Boula de Mareüil (Université Paris-Saclay & Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Digital Sciences) to include the regional and minority languages of Lower Saxony. As part of the project, language maps were created on which various Low German and Sater Frisian dialects can be listened to. The Aesop fable "North Wind and Sun" serves as the basis, which is translated into the respective local dialects and read aloud. The Ostfriesische Landschaft and Kiel University have already recorded Low German speakers from East Frisia and Schleswig-Holstein(Kiel University project page). Now, with the help of your translations, we have expanded the atlas to include the Low German varieties of Bremen, the rest of Lower Saxony and Sater Frisian. We are delighted with every recording that has reached us and enriched the sounding language atlas! All recordings submitted by May 2024 will be included in the atlas.

You can quickly find out whether your local variety is represented in the sounding language atlas by taking a look at the atlas.

We are currently finalising the project and would like to thank all contributors!
