As an independent form of Frisian, Sater Frisian is a minority language and at home in the immediate vicinity of Oldenburg: Saterland, with around 1500 active speakers of Seeltersk, forms a linguistic enclave in Lower Saxony. The regional language Low German or Plattdüütsch is spoken by around 3 to 5 million people in the northern German Federal States of Lower Saxony, Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein as well as in the northern parts of North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony-Anhalt and Hesse. The number of people who understand the language is even greater.
If you study in Oldenburg, you can not only learn to speak Low German and Sater Frisian, you can also study the history of these languages and their status and variants in the present, Low German literature and finally the question of how to teach Low German and Sater Frisian in schools and how to promote encounters with these languages in the classroom. There has been a research focus on Low German and Sater Frisian at the Carl von Ossietzky University since 1983.
You can find out about the various options for studying Low German in Oldenburg - from a Bachelor's degree in Low German, to a specialisation in Low German, to a taster course and guest studies - under 'Study'. The Low German and Sater Frisian specialisation at the University of Oldenburg is also a member of the teaching network "Niederdeutsch vermitteln" (LeNie), which develops and provides inter-university courses for students of the subject of Low German at the participating universities.
