Studies in perceptual geography

The works published in the series Wahrnehmungsgeographische Studien have their theoretical location in human geography and at its transdisciplinary margins. The programmatic attention to the rationally formative and emotionally experiencing subject is linked to theoretical preferences: in terms of scientific theory in favour of theory pluralism and in terms of research methodology in favour of the hermeneutic paradigm. The series is open to theory-orientated, empirical, application- and planning-related work.

The Value of Resources in Common Property Regimes for Actors' Well-being: A comparative example of seed commons in societies of affluence and scarcity using the capability approach

Nina Gmeiner
Wahrnehmungsgeographische Studien Vol. 31
University of Oldenburg Press (UOLP), 2024
ISBN 978-3-8142-2412-1

Abstract

Seeds and varieties are frequently managed in commons institutions around the world, referred to as seed commons. Economically, transaction costs are high in these property regimes compared to private property seeds. The hypothesis is that commons raise commoners' well-being by providing them with diverse economic, social, ecological and cultural benefits. The research question: In what way do seed commons influence farmer-breeders' individual well-being, visible in the capabilities they enable or prohibit? Eleven capabilities are distilled from case study research in the Philippines and Germany. Farmerbreeders benefit from an interwoven set of assets they gain by active involvement in their seed commons community, including economic security, professional and personal support, knowledge gains and improvements in critical thinking. In fact, this research suggests that it might be beneficial to consider commons more frequently as a go-to property regime for the 21st century.

Suburban living environments - (re)constructions of space and routines on the outskirts of Hanover

Angelina Göb
Lebenswelten im Suburbanen - (Re)construktionen von Raum und Routinen am Rande von Hannover
Wahrnehmungsgeographische Studien 30
BIS-Verlag, Oldenburg 2022
ISBN 9783814223995

Abstract

This work impressively addresses a research gap in the field of qualitative ethnographic suburbia research. Using the example of two places on the outskirts of Hanover, Angelina Göb examines how residents perceive, appropriate and evaluate their living environment. The focus is on the question of life and experience in suburban spaces. Using phenomenological, highly detailed descriptions, the author has succeeded in highlighting and addressing the multi-layered social and spatial levels of interpretation patterns and constitutions of meaning. Angelina Göb identifies the mutually influencing processes of perception (of the self, of others and of space), the utilisation of space and interactions. In this field of tension, two overarching patterns of interpretation crystallise that all residents can agree on: "You have everything here" and "You just know each other". The suburban space thus appears primarily as an everyday "utility space". In its manageability and predictability, it represents a "comfort zone" for everyone living there; it enables a comfortable, predictable life "on site" without having to provide anything in return. Keeping options open increases the possibility of becoming "at home" without having to identify with the space or the people living there. The aim of the residents is to lead a pleasant and conflict-free life in a space that suits them or can be "made to fit" again and again - according to the respective phase of life, existing needs and given resources (via temporal, spatial and social coping strategies).

Geographies of Food - Perception and Reception of Protected Areas in the Mirror of Culinary Regional Products

Geographies of Food - Perception and Reception of Protected Areas in the Mirror of Culinary Regional Products
Wahrnehmungsgeographische Studien, Vol. 28
BIS-Verlag, Oldenburg 2019
ISBN 9783814223667

Abstract

The ubiquitous human interaction with food makes the "geography" of eating a topic of everyday debate as well as scientific discourse. Food and eating have always been a central element of human existence. They play a fundamental role in everyday survival strategies as well as in people's thoughts on pleasure. Food is also a present topic in the - today increasingly worrying - view of the future of nutrition. In the course of a growing sensitisation to questions of food quality, animal welfare, organic farming or sustainable living, Europe is also placing increasing emphasis on "healthy" food and genuine food. Protected areas such as national parks, biosphere reserves and nature parks have a special role to play in this context: in recent years, initiatives have emerged in many protected area regions that serve the production, processing and marketing of high-quality regional foods. Protected areas are thus becoming promoters of "better food", just as regional culinary products are becoming instruments of regional development and "ambassadors" of area protection.
