Mirasto symposium

Symposium "Rethinking further education in the migration society - framework conditions for academic appointments in social work and education for migrants"

30 October 2025 from 10:00 - 16:00

Royal Stables Communication Centre (Appelstraße 7) of Leibniz University Hannover

The conference focuses on topics related to the recognition of educational qualifications acquired abroad by people with a migration biography in the social and educational field. The background to this is that many university degrees and qualifications obtained by migrants and refugees in their country of origin are still not recognised in (social) educational fields of work. As a result, many people with a migration background who wish to continue their academic education experience (institutional) obstacles and the devaluation of their qualifications.

Our conference is based on workshop formats with partners from the field. In workshops, we would particularly like to give space to the perspectives of migrant self-organisations (MSOs) and migrant organisations in the counselling and further education landscape and the socio-pedagogical field in order to be able to contribute their needs and those of their addressees. We would like to see an exchange in which migrant organisations in particular and their valuable work in supporting people with refugee and migration biographies are given space and recognised.

Parallel to the panel discussion, we are offering a Safer Space explicitly for non-white people. This space will be used for peer-to-peer dialogue between colleagues. The hosting projects and organisations will not participate in this space. The topics discussed here will only be shared with third parties based on the motivation of the participants.

Co-operation

"MIRASTO - Migrant Self-Organisations and Socio-Pedagogical Further Education" at the University of Oldenburg.

The "MIRASTO" project is being carried out in co-operation between Goethe University and the University of Oldenburg and aims to develop modules and materials for diversity-sensitive further education in (social) educational fields.

On the one hand, the institutional training courses are intended to counter the shortage of skilled workers and, at the same time, to open up opportunities for immigrants from third countries whose educational training and previous work in Germany has so far not been recognised or only partially recognised in legal, technical or professional terms.

In Oldenburg, sub-project 3 of the "MIRASTO" project is dedicated to designing and testing diversity-sensitive training and learning materials. It combines the findings from research with the experiences of migrant self-organisations.

Training and learning modules are developed in a dialogue-based workshop format. The many years of experience of the Centre for Lifelong Learning (C3L) and the Centre for Migration and Cultural Studies (CMC) at the University of Oldenburg will play a key role in the (further) development. CMC - Centre for Migration, Education and Cultural Studies // University of Oldenburg

In addition to the qualification programme, a practical handbook and a documentary film will be produced, which will be made available to all interested parties in a suitable form for their own use at the end of the project.

"Contact study programme: Recognition and pedagogical competence in the migration society"

The project"Kontaktstudium: Anerkennung und pädagogische Kompetenz in der Migrationsgesellschaft" is being carried out by the CMC (Center for Migration, Education and Cultural Studies), C3L (Center for Lifelong Learning) and the Institute of Educational Sciences at the University of Oldenburg in co-operation with kargah e.V. in Hanover, effect gGmbH in Bremen and KUBI Gesellschaft für Kultur und Bildung gGmbH & Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. It is co-financed by the European Union from the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF). It is also funded by the PROFI programme of the DAAD with funds from the BMFTR.

The project consists of four building blocks. They are aimed at providing sustainable support for the effective participation of highly qualified migrants and refugees who are striving for qualification-appropriate and fair access to education in the pedagogical field and social participation in line with their level of qualification.
