Privacy-Aware Trustworthy AI (PATAI)
The Privacy-Aware Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (PATAI) research group, led by Dr. Federico Mazzone, is embedded in the Safety-Security-Interaction (SSI) group at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Oldenburg.
PATAI was established as part of the AI Incubator “Connected Health Nordwest”, an interdisciplinary initiative bringing together the University Medicine Oldenburg, the Department of Computer Science, OFFIS, and DFKI to strengthen research and collaboration on artificial intelligence in healthcare.
The group’s mission is to develop machine learning methods and systems that jointly address privacy, security, and trustworthiness (namely, properties like robustness, explainability, fairness, and auditability), putting a particular focus on applied cryptography and privacy-enhancing technologies such as homomorphic encryption, secure multi-party computation, and differential privacy. Further research topics include secure and collaborative machine learning and the development of practical solutions for distributed and sensitive-data environments. Healthcare is the group’s primary application domain, but the developed methods and technologies are designed to be applicable to a broad range of privacy- and security-sensitive AI scenarios.
