Home and memory in the region

Research interests:

Although in recent years German historians have been working more intensively on various aspects of the culture of remembrance (especially the politics of remembrance and places of remembrance), research into the didactics of history is still in its infancy. In a programmatic article in the "Zeitschrift für Geschichtsdidaktik", Bernd Schönemann pointed out that history didactics "should pay more attention to the medium-range perspectives that have received too little attention from the 'German places of remembrance'".These included studies on "local historical cultures in comparison" and on "regional memory landscapes in their genesis, structure and function" (Bernd Schönemann, Geschichtskultur als Forschungskonzept der Geschichtsdidaktik, in: Zeitschrift für Geschichtsdidaktik 2002, pp. 78-86, here p. 83, emphasis added).

This is where my research interests begin. I can build on numerous previous research projects in which I have dealt with the history of the regional homeland movement, regional history research and regional identity politics in the "Lower Saxony area". Taking up these previous approaches, I am currently working on a systematisation of these approaches under the heading of a regional culture of remembrance, with a focus on developments in the 19th and 20th centuries.
