Northwest German regional history

Research on Northwest German regional history

Research interests:

In my academic career to date, I have dealt with both specialised and didactic issues (see my list of publications). However, my professorship here in Oldenburg specialises exclusively in didactics (although there are numerous overlaps in the field of historical culture). There are four reasons why I continue to be involved in historical research, albeit to a limited extent:

  1. A prerequisite for researching regional remembrance culture is an in-depth study of the history of the region itself, informed by my own research.
  2. As a didactic historian, I also see one of my tasks in communicating historical knowledge to a local and regional public interested in history in the north-west, both verbally (see Lectures) and in writing, and in co-operation with historical-cultural institutions (see Co-operation). This not only corresponds to my self-image as a didactic historian, but also has something to do with the strong regional roots of the University of Oldenburg.
  3. The integration of local, regional and regional history topics into the classroom, which I believe makes sense - within limits - also requires a specialised approach.
  4. And finally: subject-specific didactic reflection without subject-specific expertise seems highly problematic to me - however, subject-specific expertise is best maintained if you are engaged in specialised research yourself.
